VLS receives 60th case as complaints regarding 5W-30 engine oils continue

VLS, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications, has received its 60th case, a complaint against a 5W-30 Fully Synthetic SN/CF engine oil. The product is now being sourced and investigated through the anonymous and rigorous VLS technical review process.

Over the course of 2018 VLS has seen an influx of complaints, particularly against 5W-30 oils. In its fifth anniversary year, VLS has received six new cases, on the back of four new cases at the end of 2017. Nine out of these ten cases have concerned 5W-30 engine oils, and most relate to their ability to deliver on all the specifications they are claiming. Six of the cases have already been investigated and concluded with the concerned parties acting to either amend the claims being made or discontinue the products from sale.

David Wright, Company Secretary of VLS and Director General of UKLA said: “The continuing stream of new cases demonstrates that VLS’s role to uphold standards in the lubricants industry is as vital as ever. Lubricant products are increasing in complexity to cater to the demands for higher performance and lower emissions from modern engines. Coupled with that, the aftermarket’s quest to reduce stock holding and increase profit is creating a real challenge for marketers and manufacturers. Yet the responsibility for the credentials claimed by an oil sits firmly with those marketers and manufacturers. End users must be confident that the products they are buying can deliver what is claimed.”
