Christopher Hamilton Business development manager 2 What do you enjoy about your role?
Job in Five
Claire Law Atwood Tate Managing director
My
Every day is different, and it’s really busy! I’m working on a wide range of roles and talk to all sorts of people, from children’s publishing to very technical organisa- tions and across editorial, marketing, production and sales. I still get a buzz when we get a job offer in and our candidate says “yes”.
3 What are you working on at the moment?
1 Describe your role. I’m the m.d. here so
I oversee the day-to-day running of our London and Oxford offices. Right now I’m looking after job vacancies outside London (covering the end of Claire Carrington- Smith’s maternity leave). It covers a really wide territory, and I’m working on jobs at different levels of seniority.
Product Manager Atwood Tate
London A leading professional publisher based in London is looking for a Product Manager to
take ownership of Sector Research. Joining the team on a 12-month fixed-term contract basis, this is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Product Manager with an excellent Market Research background to act as champion for all things research.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the economy and this has a knock-on effect on the job market—candidates can be less inclined to move roles so there are skills shortages in some areas. This means it’s harder to find people, but that’s what we’re good at! We are sometimes asked to find an impossible mix of skills and experience (we call this a unicorn job), but we like a challenge and can use our expert knowledge to advise clients on what is viable.
4 What skills do you need for your role?
Being extremely organised. I can be working on several job vacancies at a time and getting enquiries and applica- tions that need speedy replies. I’m very good at writing to-do lists and trying hard to get through them while dealing with incoming enquiries.
5 What advice would you give to those
looking to work in the industry? If you’re starting out we’ve got lots of advice on our blog. Publishing is a big industry with lots of different sectors so think about what you’d like to do and be open minded. If I were looking again, I’d prob- ably go for a data or market- ing role and would look at the professional or e-learning sectors (instead of editorial in trade book publishing which is still extremely competitive!).
