My
Selling rights gives you the opportunity to travel the world and discover new cultures. Working for a small independent publisher then allows you to share what you’ve learnt with editors and designers. You can see how that helps shape the publish- ing list and make it more internationally appealing.
3 What are you working on at the moment?
1 Describe your role. I manage the Nosy Crow
foreign rights and coedition sales team. Personally, I sell coedition and translation rights to publishers in Asia, France, Italy, Germany and Greece. Throughout the year I juggle travelling to fairs and visiting foreign customers with negotiating deals and co-ordinating
The department is busy preparing for 300+ appoint- ments at the Frankfurt Book Fair. We’re also looking ahead to Sharjah and Shanghai. At the same time, we are looking forward to 2020 and filling our diary with rights trips. We are also going through sales figures from 2018 and 2019 to identify which markets are key to our business, but also which territories seem to have untapped potential.

4 What skills do you need for your role?
A good rights seller needs self-confidence and strong communication skills to perform well at fairs. A meticulous eye for detail and the ability to prioritise and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment are equally important to translate good meetings and expres- sions of interest into coedition orders or translation deals. Speaking a foreign language helps build long-lasting relationships with customers, but a genuine opennes and curiosity for other cultures is really what rights is about.
5 What advice would you give to those
looking to work in the industry? Get involved and volunteer. I approached Nosy Crow in case they needed help at the Bologna Book Fair, and after three days of getting coffees and holding impromptu rights meetings, I was offered a role as rights aºssistant.
