Kverneland tops the bill of graphic artists


A


rguably Norway’s greatest graphic novelist, Steffan Kverneland has been practising his craft for a long


time, having first been published in KOnk (Norway’s answer to Mad magazine) in 1980, at age 16. After working for KOnk and a number of underground comix publishers in the 1980s, in 1993 he released his first graphic novel, De knyttede never (The Clenched Fists), based on the 1911 novel by Øvre Richter Frich. Kverneland is best known internationally for two graphic biographies, Olaf G (2004, in collaboration with Lars Fiske) and Munch (2013). Today’s event is the first of four


Kverneland will feature in during FBF, culminating with a Friday night reading from his latest title, Et Selvmord (A Suicide), a memoir in which Kverneland deals with his father’s suicide.

or over 20 years, Oslo-born and Lillehammer-raised Åsne Seierstad has reported from


some of the most battle-scarred and dangerous places on the planet, including Chechnya, Kosovo and Iraq. Her months in Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks, which saw the Northern Alliance displace the ruling Taliban, led to her writing her international hit The Bookseller of Kabul. Seierstad will be largely discussing


Kudos to the programmers of the often politically-charged Weltempfang seminar stream for not shying away from thorny issues in these sometimes overly sensitive times. This FBF will see sessions on the crackdown on free speech in Spain, the dire human rights situation in Eritrea and a raſt on various aspects of climate change. An intriguing event today will tackle the diffi-


culties of translating works with language that may be construed as offensive. The panel of three English-to-German translators—Ingo Herzke, Miriam Mandelkow and Andreas Nohl—and moder- ator Mithu M Sanyal will explore the theoretical and practical perspectives: how best to convey Mark Twain’s use of the N-word in Huckleberry Finn? What pronouns can be used in German for non-binary characters? Should a translator impose present-day standards to older works?
