The constituency being left out of the current great audiobook revolu- tion is, for the most part, independent booksellers. In the early 2010s, former indie publisher Mark Pearson decided to do something about that, co-founding Seatle-based start-up
Libro.fm. The platform’s ethos is that it enables its audiobook customers to select their favourite bricks-and-mortar bookshops with which
Libro.fm will split the profits, thus creating, Pearson says, a “sustainable, communit-driven model that’s valuable to listener, author and bookstore alike”. Pearson will be interviewed today by The Bookseller editor Philip
Jones as almost an amuse-bouche for the FutureBook Live Conference (held in London on 25th November), where other innovators will meet and speak about the digital content revolution. Jones will also reveal the shortlists for the FutureBook Awards. Winners last year included Dialogue Books publisher Sharmaine Lovegrove, who was named FutureBook Person of the Year.
