YOUNG TALENT RECEPTION

Today, 2 p.m. ? Frankfurt Pavilion, Agora 12 10th October 2018

Te showpiece event at FBF for those in trade publishing over the last few years has been the annual c.e.o. talk, where a big cheese is wheeled out to be quizzed about his or her business, the tough issues of the moment and the industry of the future. The events can be quite spicy, such as last year’s straight-talking, freewheel- ing performance by Simon & Schuster boss Carolyn Reidy. Even the c.e.o.s that play it a litle closer to the chest—I’m looking at you, Jacob Dalborg from Bonnier at Frankfurt 2016—can reveal telling nuggets about where global publishing is going. In the 2018 hot seat is John Sargent, head of Macmillan’s global trade publishing division. There will be plent to chew on, not least of all an issue threading through many seminars this FBF: free speech. Macmillan published Michael Wolff’s Trump/White House exposé Fire and Fury in the US this year and, shockingly in the Land of the Free, had to face down the president’s lawyers to get it released.
