Job in Five

Frances Sleigh-Senior Nosy Crow Sales manager

My

You have to be quick off the mark and flexible; especially with special sales, where we often have to match up our UK printings with rights and export to make sure we’re making the most of any reprint opportunity.

3 What are you working on at the moment?

I manage supermarket, online and special sales. Day to day, that can be anything from presenting our new titles to buyers, deciding how many copies of a book to print, planning online marketing campaigns, coming up with ideas for and costing special sales, or feeding back trends

1 Describe your role.

It’s ongoing, but last year we brought managing Amazon sales in-house, and it’s been a huge project. You get an incredible amount of data from Amazon, which has really been changing how I think about who’s buying our books, and how these people look for new children’s books.

4 Which skills do you need for your role?

You need to be organised, happy to talk about books, and have an eye for an opportunity. I think there’s an idea that you need to

be hugely outgoing and confident to work in sales, but while you certainly need to be able to build relationships and present with confidence, you also need to be able to sit back and analyse and evalu- ate progress to plan ahead.

5 What advice would you give to those

looking to work in the industry? Look for varied opportunities. I never thought I’d work in sales but it really suits me. Stop and consider: what are your skills, what do you enjoy doing, and what would you be prepared to give a go? Also, broaden your search: there are independent publishers out there doing incredible work, and working at somewhere smaller often means you get a huge range of experience.
