IN BRIEF

My BCBF Catherine Bell

My Bologna Children's Book Fair

As told to Natasha Onwuemezi

Would it be wrong to say the thing I’m most looking forward to at Bologna Children's Book Fair is the pasta? Of course I can’t wait to see a busy stand too, and that flicker of interest from international publishers or custom- ers when they love what we are showing them. That’s why we all do what we do.

This year, Liz Pichon is bringing an amazing pair of shoes to show our global partners for her new project Shoe Wars. That’s a first; a pair of shoes rather than a book to hold up at Bologna.

Bologna feels like a big family reunion. I love catching up with our Scholastic colleagues from around the world. The warmth and energy gives you an amazing boost to face the gruelling schedules. I also love bumping into those colleagues from years gone by that I only ever see at book fairs these days.

My first fair was when I worked for Ladybird and I remember being completely gobsmacked that this beautiful place, with the most wonderful piazza and glorious light, was “work”.

I’m not telling you my favourite restaurant, for fear we won’t get a table next year

I have lost count of how many Bolognas I’ve attended, or I don’t want to count, if I’m being completely honest, but you can safely say I’ve been to a lot!

The Scholastic rights team are the gurus on where to eat and drink in Bologna. I love that I never get given a menu. I’m not telling you my favourite restaurant, for fear we won’t get a table next year.

I’m never without heels. So if, like me, you need an extra inch or two, a good pair of heels that allow you to make the toilet queue between meetings without resorting to a plaster are a must. And, of course, seting your alarm at the right time for that early morning Sunday flight aſter the clocks go forward. Always tricky!

The famed culinary scene in Bologna is just one of the appeals of the annual fair for Catherine Bell, who recommends the gelato, forgiving footwear, and remembering to implement daylight saving time...

The children’s book industry is unique. It’s supportive, warm and, above all, packed full of talent. A walk around the fair reminds you how lucky we are to work in such a vibrant and creative industry that engages children with reading. A good book with a great hook can go from a Bologna “moment” into the hands of kids all around the world.

In 2069, I very much hope the future publishing genera- tion will still be enjoying the ice cream, camaraderie and the sheer crazy fun of Bologna.

We need to be creative, energetic and bold to ensure we keep new readers engaged, and where beter to meet to celebrate that and cheer on each other than in Bologna?
