Rebels with a cause

Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo scored a double at the top of the Italian chil- dren’s chart in 2018, with Storie de Buonanotte per Bambine Ribelli 2 outselling its predecessor by 18,330 copies to bag the top spot. Te most successful crowd-funded authors of all time were just two of three home-grown authors in the kids’ top 10, along with Luigi Garlando.
American author fills the charts with Wonder
Long- running Wonder hit
R J Palacio’s Wonder was already an eye-wateringly huge international hit before its Julia Roberts- starring film adaptation thundered into cinemas worldwide in autumn 2017. Te 2013-published edition of the novel had barely dropped out of the Italian children’s charts before it boomeranged back up again in the wake of the film’s release, selling 102,433 copies across last year and swiping third place behind Cavallo and Favilli’s duology . It defeated Jeff Kinney and J K Rowling to become the kids’ fiction bestseller of 2018. Two of Palacio’s Wonder spin-offs, Il Libro de Julian and Il Libro de Charlotte, also charted in the territory’s top 100 children’s books.

instalment number 11 was just behind its series successor in the chart, with Avanti Tutta! selling 9,903 copies fewer than Una Vacanza da Panico in 2018
8 Mafia tale hits the mark
Luigi Garlando’s Per Questo Mi Chiamo Giovanni, involving a father telling his son the true story of murdered Mafia-fighting magistrate Giovanni Falcone, sold 44,982 copies to claim eighth.

Potter’s Stone holds firm two decades after release
The release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in 2016 seems to have boosted the series as whole, in the UK and internationally (not that it needed it). In Italy, the newly published 20th-anniversary editions of the original series Wingardium Leviosa’d up the chart, with Harry Potter e La Pietra Filosofale selling 63,974 copies—around double the volume achieved by the 2013-published edition, which charted in 14th.

The original Diario di Una Schiappa
gave Jeff Kinney his third top 10 place. Published 11 years ago, the book that kicked off the global phenomonon series shifted 39,554 copies in Italy in 2018.

2 Good Night duo double up
The original Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls barely slowed down at all in 2018, selling 120,790 copies The half-a-million-units mark is in sight.

Panic sets in as Kinney’s Kid packs his bags
Jeff Kinney’s 12th Wimpy Kid title swiped fourth place in Italy, selling 75,719 copies. Though in English its title is The Getaway, the Italian edition’s Una Vacanza da Panico directly translates to “The Panic Holiday”, which perhaps encapsulates the novel’s events a little more accu- rately. In total, 14 of Kinney’s Diario di una Schiappa featured in Italy’s children’s top 100 last year, including the film tie-in edition.
7 Saint blesses the charts
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Il Piccolo Principe is a perennial bestseller on the continent, and Italy in 2018 didn’t break the mould: the French classic sold 53,282 copies over the year.

J K on a Rowl with Chamber of Secrets
Rowling’s second entry in the Italian top 10 is Harry Potter e la Camera dei Segreti, which sold 35,871 copies in 2018 to chart in 10th place. Rowling has an impressive 20 entries in the Italian children’s top 100. Alongside the original seven Potter titles and La Maledizione Dell’Erede playscript, the 1999 edition of Gli Animali Fantastici e Dove Trovarli charted in 71st place, and both Fantastic Beasts... screenplays.
