Gospodinov (translated by Angela Rodel) sold 250 copies. The week aſter, it sold 1,338. Similarly, in the week before Tombs of Sand by Geetanjali Shree (translated by Daisy Rockwell) won the 2022 prize, it sold 70 copies only to sell 684 the following week. In both cases, the aſterglow lasted about 30 weeks, so there’s still plent of time for Kairos to keep ticking through the tills.
Sales cracked £9m last year, setting a new high for the past two decades

e often say that history has a habit of repeating itself, but this is not so
for World & General History which reached historic new heights last year. The subcategory’s value through Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market has experienced major fluctuations over the past two decades, yo-yoing up and down to create a somewhat neurotic-looking graph that peaks in 2023. Like the gold rushes of
centuries past, the subcategory is boom and bust. It might jump ahead by 65% one year, as it did in 2018, only to slide back 5% and then 35% in the years following. Now, in this example, it would be fair to assume that Covid-19 had something to do with the precipi- tous fall of 2020. However, the subcategory performed reason- ably well that year. At £4.8m, the result was less than £1m off its 20-year average. Prior to 2023, a good year

cashed in around £7.5m, but last year witnessed a new record £9.2m. Blockbuster historian Mary Beard’s Emperor of Rome reigned in pole position after shifting 36,020 copies. Fellow professor Peter Frankopan trailed in second with his environmental
take on world history in The Earth Transformed and podcasters Tom Holland (not that Tom Holland) and Dominic Sandbrook held third with their goldmine of historical trivia The Rest is History. Naturally, Profile and Bloomsbury came out on top for the year after more than doubling their annual results for 2022. Collectively, the top trio sold
nearly 88,000 copies, but that wasn’t actually a huge improve- ment on the previous year and,
