467,183 The number of hardback copies Spare sold in its first week
Bookstat Pre-order Top 20 Nathan Anthony finds recipe for success
their own energy bills in the last few months, Bored of Lunch beating Prince Harry’s Spare to the pre-order number one may be a little more baffling. Spare, despite selling 467,183 hardback copies in its blockbuster first week in January, was actually the third most pre-ordered title according to Bookstat, with the newest Pinch of Nom title, the cost-of- living-crisis-friendly Budget, to be released in June, swiping second after its announcement in early March. Bookstat’s algorithm, which uses regular shopping part- ners to determine its estimates, could have been skewed by Spare’s sheer uniqueness—surpris- ingly “warts-and-all memoir by the fifth- in-line to the throne” is not yet an Amazon category—but also, with this chart cover- ing January to March, it will have missed out Spare’s presum- ably eye-watering pre-order sales on its announcement in November.

Chemistry was the most-pre- ordered Adult Fiction title of the last three months—the début paperback landed with a bang in the overall top spot on release early this month, but has sold consistently strongly since, with both its subsequent two weeks on the shelves notching up higher volumes, even without a pre- order boost. Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher’s Never Never also scored high pre-order volumes, as did Dilly Court’s Dolly’s Dream, which claimed the Mass Market Fiction top spot in February. The final title in Lucinda Riley’s Seven Sisters series, Atlas, published post- humously and finished by her
son Harry Whittaker, is already climbing the chart ahead of its release in May.
