between 18 and 84—reports that a consumer’s familiarity with a particular book is now the deci- sive factor, measuring 2% higher than 2019 and edging ahead of other drivers like narrator’s voice and low prices or offers. Even the remaining 22 audio-
book titles that did not cross over with Nielsen BookScan’s top 500 titles for 2023 seem to confirm this. Of these several would broadly be in the clas- sics, including
The Jane Austen Collection, J R R Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Others have previously been
heavy hitters in print, such as Matthew McConaughey’s memoir Greenlights, Stephen Fry’s Mythos and Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck,
which have sold more than 1.1m TCM copies combined. Several categories that are
huge drivers on print sales, such as cookery, romantic fiction and Children’s & Young Adult titles did not translate into top audiobook sales. In fact, excluding the Harry Potter books, there was only one other children’s title that made the Top 50: Hugely Horrid, a collection of 10 stories by Lucinda Whiteley and based on Francesca Simon’s original Horrid Henry series, in 47th place. The Horrid Henry audiobooks are narrated by the cast of the popular companion television series that first aired on CITV and is now available to stream on Netflix. Looking ahead, the charts from
January tell us little about whether familiarity will continue to be the key influence on audiobook purchases in 2024. Just under half of Audible’s top 20 titles for the first month of the year also appeared in BookScan’s top 100.
