record number of 77 independent bookshops across nine different regions and countries have been
named regional and country finalists for Independent Bookshop of the Year at The British Book Awards. Sponsored by book wholesaler Gardners, the award celebrates bookshops at the centre of local communities. Independent bookshops from London,
North England, Scotland, South-East England and South-West England are vying for the award, alongside others from East England, the Midlands, the Island of Ireland and Wales. “Indies have come out of the pandemic and into cost-of-living and business rates crises, yet still through innovation and creativit thrive as never before,” said Tom Tivnan, managing editor at The Bookseller. The shops will compete to win in their region, with winners announced on Tuesday 12th March. They will then contend for the overall prize, which will be announced at a ceremony held at Grosvenor House, London, on Monday 13th May 2024.
The overall Independent Bookshop of the
Year winner will also be in the running to be crowned Book Retailer of the Year. Previous
