al McDermid’s How the Dead Speak is far from all talk, as it leapfrogs


Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse to claim the Official UK Top 50 number one. With 16,856 copies sold in its first full week on sale, it becomes the first fiction title of 2020 to take the top spot, following a five-week stronghold for Pinch of Nom: Everyday Light over January and Mackesy’s Waterstones Book of the Year galloping into its first top spot a week ago. (To be clear, Nielsen BookScan codes The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse as non-fiction, under the History of Ideas and Popular Philosophy sub-category, though retailers’ definitions vary.)
