ook sales in the north of England have outperformed the rest of the UK so far this year in data from
NielsenIQ BookScan’s Total Consumer Market (TCM). While volume is down 0.5% in bookshops in the north, it is a shallower drop than that experienced in the rest of Britain, where sales have fallen nearly three times faster in the same period. In keeping with the rest of the
UK, while volume sales are down, value sales are up, and more so in the regions in this analysis. Up to 17th May, value sales across the whole TCM were up 0.4%, the equivalent of £2.6m, with much of
this number – nearly £1.7m of it – thanks to readers in the north. What is “the north”? I have one
friend from Brighton who consid- ers anything above the M4 to be the north, while conversely, inhabitants of Yorkshire might consider residents of Birmingham southern softies. So, to avoid controversy, Nielsen IQ’s North East, North West and Yorkshire regions are based upon the old ITV regions, meaning that bookshops as far south as Long Sutton in Lincolnshire and as far north as Berwick-upon-Tweed appear in these figures. An impressive £1.3m of the
