Though Peter James’ last four titles have topped the Weekly E-Book Ranking, this is the first time he has topped the monthly top 50
now, HBO series “Game of Thrones” ended in May, with Bran, a character so intriguing the writers forgot about him for the whole of season five, as king. As a result, the e-book edition of George R R Martin’s A Game of Thrones, which kicked off the A Song of Ice and Fire

series, soared into the Weekly E-Book Ranking number one spot. However, in the print charts, book buyers plumped for the full five-book, seven-volume box set, retailing at £65, over the relatively slimline 848 page opener—the former improved 75% in volume in the week of the finale, and beat A Game of Thrones into the print Top 50. E-editions of both feature
in May’s monthly e-book chart, with A Game of Thrones in 12th place and the full series—priced at £24.49—in 50th. Martin’s title also took the Audible number one for the month, but audiobook listeners should be prepared for a marathon: the first two audiobooks in the series, A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, take longer to listen to than it takes to watch the entire television series. The ITV series “The Durrells”,
based on the lives of writer Gerald Durrell’s family during their stay in Corfu in the 1930s, also came to an end in May, and the first in Durrell’s four-book autobiography series, My Family and Other Animals, bounced into the e-book top 50, in 23rd place.
Date range May 2019 Titles with a digital list price of less than £2 are excluded. Participating publishers: Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Pan Macmillan, Bloomsbury, Simon & Schuster, Faber Factory, Canongate, Walker Books and Bonnier Zaffre.
