Comms director Harington to leave Hachette after 12 years
Hachette group communications director Clare Harington is step- ping down after 12 years with the company. Harington, who will assist c.e.o. David Shelley in finding her successor before she leaves her role towards the end of this year, said: “I have had a fantastic 12 years at Hachette, working closely first with Tim Hely Hutchinson and then with David and many wonderful colleagues. It’s been enormously rewarding, and I have enjoyed it so much, but now is the time to do other things—not all of them focused around work.” Harington joined Hachette in 2007 from a similar role at Random House, having previ- ously been a publisher at Pan Macmillan and marketing direc- tor for Penguin. Essex libraries saved after council U-turn
Essex County Council has announced it is ditching plans to close its libraries, and their future is secure for the next five years, following a huge commu- nity campaign supported by authors including David Walliams right and Jacqueline Wilson. The Tory-controlled local authority
had proposed shutting 25 of its 74 facilities, handing over a further 19 to community groups or organisations, with 15 others to run in partnership schemes. Those plans led to a number of large demonstrations, national headlines and high-profile support from authors. At full council on Tuesday 9th

Clarification Rights deal
Bodley Head bags Miliband manifesto The Bodley Head has secured Ed Miliband’s first book following a swift pre-empt, with the former Labour Party leader offering “radical ideas to remake the country”. Editorial director Will Hammond acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Andrew Gordon at David Higham Associates. The publisher said that the currently untitled book will “present a host of inspiring ideas to make Britain a more progressive place”, with publication slated for 2020.
North of England Top 20
A top 20 chart of bestselling books by publishers based in the North of England (Regional Focus, 28th June) was compiled with Nielsen BookScan “publisher group” data. The top 20 has been re-run to include titles at the imprint level in order to capture sales from smaller concerns which are not classified as BookScan publisher groups. The chart spans the date range 31st December 2017–29th December 2018. We apologise for the omissions.

July, County Council leader David Finch announced that instead of closing libraries, the local authority will develop a £3m investment plan to make the service “fit for the 21st century”. Finch said the consultation on the original plans, which garnered 21,000 responses, had “galvanised [a] love of libraries”. A new library

strategy for the county will be published on Monday (15th July). But he added that the council
would still seek to work with commu- nity groups to keep some of the facilities open, sparking concern from campaign group Save Our Libraries Essex (SOLE), which had initially welcomed the turnaround. Andy Abbott from SOLE said: “We
do believe the U-turn is a victory for people power and the power of protest... [but we’re] concerned that Essex County Council is continuing to talk about entirely unsustainable plans to run libraries voluntarily.”
