Describe your role I report to the chief executive and support her four board of directors. My role entails the usual PA support but more than that I am involved in project management and event organising.

What do you like best about your role? Being the oracle—well that’s what some have called me! I have worked with chief executive Alison Goff for over 10 years and it’s true to say I know every person employed by Octopus and if anybody needs anything they will invariably come to me fi rst. I love that I am left to carry out my work and run my projects single-handedly and with the full support of Alison. Meeting, greeting and becoming friends with some of our authors is a real treat too. It is such a good time for Octopus as we are having success after success with some of our titles at this point in time and I have never been happier.

Which new projects are you working on at the moment? Apart from organising the numerous staff events for this year, I am currently looking after elements of our annual sales conference, supporting the marketing team. The redesign of our reception area, which looks fantastic already, has also given me an added task of choosing and ordering about 160 titles from the warehouse. I am just waiting for the tower of boxes to arrive at my desk!

Which skills do you need to work as an executive assistant? Good administrative skills are a must and accuracy is important. Excellent organisational skills and diary juggling especially if you have five executives to look after. An executive assistant can be classed as the offi ce manager these days and would be involved in pretty much every aspect of the business. Don’t forget that all important smile…it works wonders.

What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry? From an executive assistant’s point of view, I would say don’t be fussy on what level you want to start off at. Whether it’s supporting the c.e.o., a board director or manager, you will not regret working in this industry.
