AST YEAR WAS 100 years since the Easter Rising, the event that led to Irish independence from Britain. It was a centenary that largely passed this nation by, but in book-market terms, the two countries could hardly be more entwined. A British hit is an Irish hit: witness Surrey-born Joe Wicks, who has three titles in the Irish top 20 covering sales through BookScan in January. You would think that Wicks’ Instagram fame would propel him into bestseller lists across the globe, but curiously his chirpiness and catchphrases have not endeared “The Body Coach” to the Ameri- can market—odd, considering catchphrases are enough to win a presidency (although, in that case, chirpiness was decidedly not a factor).
