Its UK foreign rights department now sells translation rights for both the US and UK sides of the business, a change that was implemented in 2019. Director Will Francis said: “We can’t wait to start working with Nathaniel and Mairi, who bring with them deep experience from different sides of the market, literary and commercial, as well as a knowledge of both agenting and publishing. “And we’re thrilled to
promote Ellis, who has provided both flair and continuity to the rights department over the past three and a half years.”

K retailers say they are being impacted by post-Brexit costs
as indie publishers call for the government to assist on VAT charges that have halted EU deliveries. Following the UK’s exit from
the European Union and the end of the transition arrangement, new rules kicked in this month requiring businesses to register for VAT, which is now applicable on all sales at the rate charged in the customers’ country. Trade bodies, including the

Asked about the VAT change,
Waterstones said deliveries to its European shops are “proving slow, costly and require significant levels of additional bureaucracy”, while other organisations are seeing a reduction in revenue, with customers turning away to avoid extra charges. There is also concern the
change in VAT will adversely affect the independent publishing sector, with many choosing to use Amazon Marketplace to avoid red tape. Charco Press publisher Sam
McDowell is calling for the government to introduce “a centralised gateway to enable UK businesses to settle EU VAT charges”. He warned: “Any small business selling lower-priced goods directly to EU customers is now grappling with this.”

An Endless Cornish Summer Phillipa Ashley Avon, £7.99, 9780008371630 For a second year, summer romance reads are focusing very specifically on the UK’s favourite staycation destination. (Fingers crossed Cornwall never votes for independence, as the beach read market would be devas- tated.) Phillipa Ashley’s A Perfect Cornish Escape led the pack in summer 2020, and now An Endless Cornish Summer is following in its footsteps. At 5,922 copies sold in its first full week on sale, the title notched up its author’s biggest weekly sale through Nielsen’s Total Consumer Market and made its début in the Mass-Market Fiction top 20.
