After all, new releases from Katie Kirby, Jamie Smart and Lauren Roberts have dominated the charts, along with colouring books from Coco Wyo and the continued strong performance of the latest Hunger Games novel. But, according to data from
NielsenIQ BookScan’s Total Consumer Market (TCM) for the 12 weeks up to the 23rd August, total sales for the entire children’s
category were worth £83.9m – down 8.4% from the equivalent period in 2024 when the category delivered £91.6m – clocking up the poorest summer since 2019, when just £80.7m was spent on children’s books. It should be noted that techni-
cally, with two weeks missing from the data due to the nationwide lockdown, 2020’s performance was lower, bringing in £78.7m. However, the weekly average for that period is on a par with the summers of 2021-24, suggesting that the category was on course for a £90m+ summer.
