Walker Books saw operating profit more than double in 2020, rising to £5.3m, an increase of 103% on 2019’s £2.6m, according to a Companies House report. The result was impacted by government grants of £1.7m, relating to coronavirus support schemes in the US and Australia. Turnover for the year ending 31st December 2020 was £83.5m, an increase of 2.8% on 2019’s £81.2m. Profit before tax grew to £5m, up from £2.7m in 2019.


Rights deal


Blake’s TikTok hit Atlas Six picked up by Tor Tor has won a seven-way auction for self-published TikTok hit The Atlas Six, a fantasy trilogy by Olivie Blake. Publishing director Bella Pagan acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, with audio, from Tor US. Book one, The Atlas Six, is described as “The Secret History, but with magic”. The Atlas Six is now available for purchase in e-book format, via Tor Books, using the author’s original text. A revised and edited version with illustrations will be available in e-book, hardback and audio in March 2022.

The launch also sees three promotions. Former commissioning editor Anna Argenio becomes editorial director with a focus on self-help, health and lifestle at Cornerstone Press. Rowan Borchers steps up to editorial director, with a focus on history, politics and economics at Hutchinson Heinemann, working closely with Conford and publishing director Ailah Ahmed. Both continue to acquire across all three lists. Lemara Lindsay-Prince, lead editor for #Merky Books, becomes senior commis- sioning editor, with a wider remit to publish across all three imprints. Argenio and Borchers will work with Conford and associate publisher Nigel Wilcockson to acquire more self-help, lifestle, politics and big ideas titles.


Disaster expert’s memoir goes to Hodder Disaster expert professor Lucy Easthope’s memoir has gone to Hodder & Stoughton after an eight-way auction. Non-fiction publisher Kirty Topiwala acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Jo Unwin at JULA in “a passionately fought” bidding war. When the Dust Settles: Stories of Love, Loss and Hope from an Expert in Disaster will be published in March 2022 as Hodder’s lead non-fiction title, supported by a major PR and marketing campaign.
