THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS 2023 SHORTLISTS
A
ſter the triumphant return of the British Book Awards, a.k.a. the Nibbies, as an in-person event in 2022— which ran alongside a live stream of the ceremony and two regional parties—the aim this year is to go bolder and further: this is the moment to showcase the power- house industry that publishing has become and give
everyone the celebration we all deserve. We hope you come along for the journey! This year, the awards continues to find ways to increase exposure for those shortlisted. As in years past, media partners such as Scala Radio and MagicFM have been matched with individual book shortlists in order to give bespoke coverage to each. Joining the stable of partners this year is TikTok, which will be supporting the Pageturner category by amplifying content around those titles. Marketing agency Tandem Collective has also come on board, with influencer “buddy reads” launching across all Book of the Year categories in the weeks following the announcement.

A number of themes emerge from the shortlists this year: the rise in influence of BookTok, the importance of bookshops and booksellers in building bestsellers, the magnificent way market- eers and publicists continue to mine and find sales in all areas, the broadening of publishing’s output and the rise, in particular, in 2022 of “readable” books, from Babel and Skandar toVerit to The Bullet that Missed, as well as books that tell us a litle about now, from A Visible Man to Menopausing to You Can Do It. What struck me, when reading the 500-plus entries to this
year’s awards, was how, aſter the surge of the two pandemic years, the trade adjusted to the new realities of 2022, including the change in economic fortunes and the looming cost-of-living crisis, and yet still delivered. Hurrah! We are, as always, enormously grateful to everyone who
submited their entries or who otherwise engaged with us this year. We know that not everyone can be selected for the next round, but we recognise the monumental efforts that go into the work, as well as the time you put into the entries. We were glad to read them! We are grateful to our sponsors and partners, and to all of our colleagues who work on the awards throughout the year. There is a huge amount of preparation that goes into the British Book Awards and a large amount of thinking that gets us to this point. At its heart The British Book Awards is a celebration of the books, those who make them, and those who make them work. Above all it celebrates the intimate connection between the books, their makers and their audience. We hope you enjoy these shortlists, and we hope to see you in the room or online on 15th May!
