T INTRODUCTION

his year’s British Book Awards 2023 has been a real honour to run. Thank you to everyone who submited, to the shortlistees, this year’s winners and to everyone who gathered to celebrate, either at Grosvenor House London, online or at one of our three parties taking place across the UK.

We hope you found the British Book Awards 2023 compelling and more inspiring than ever. It should be—this is a fantastic sector and in terms of our support for it, we are all in. The awards reflect the entiret of the book trade and all of the hard work done throughout the past year to help books find their readers and authors grow their audience. This is no easy task, and at a time when the wider economy was still emerging from the pandemic and heading into a cost-of-living crisis, it certainly got no easier as the year went on.

This was the second year of the expanded Nibbies with the Discover book award, the re-introduction of the Individual Bookseller gong and a much-needed Freedom to Publish Award. No bit of the book business is untouched by these awards, no contribution not recognised along the way, and we continue to look at ways of expanding.

However you enjoyed the awards, we hope you were able to raise a cheer for our winners, along with the many shortlisted books, authors, illustrators, publishers, designers, editors, booksellers, agents, marketeers, sales people and publicists who have collectively added to their success. From Bonnie Garmus to Carolynn Bain to Natasha Bardon to Davina McCall, this has been a year to remember! Readers were the real winners this year, with titles ranging from Menopausing to Tyger to I’m a Fan demonstrating the remarkable virtuosit of the book business, especially for its role in amplifying and creating conversations around mental health, misogyny, sexualit and gender, the menopause and more. These awards give the lie to the idea that publishing is a one-track business: our judges this year opted to reward exceptional narratives expertly brought to market, with the trade lauded for its commitment to promoting all tpes of reading for all tpes of reader. We must give thanks to the loyal sponsors and partners who have supported the event tonight—and through the past digital editions of this event. And finally, all of us in The Bookseller team feel enormously privileged to be entrusted with the organisation of this event, one which recognises the best of everything in our business. It takes a village to raise a book and we are proud to walk in these streets.
