ith sales in the millions and a hatful of big book prizes, RCW’s Claire Wilson helped create more success for her

authors in a year than some agents might in a career. In several cases it was the culmination

of years of hard work—as with Alice Oseman, who signed with Wilson 10 years ago at the age of 18 and ended 2022 as the UK’s sixth-biggest-selling author and on top of the Bookseller 150 list of most influential people in the book trade. Other stars were newer, like Hannah Gold, who scooped the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Best Story Award with her Levi Pinfold-illustrated début novel The Last Bear. Yet more recognition came for Katherine Rundell, whose global children’s sales crested two million units, while picking up the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-fiction for Super-Infinite.

43 Wilson’s authors are as grateful for her care,

sensitivity and patience as for her career-building. “She is a dream agent… an extraordinary cham- pion,” said one. Publishers, meanwhile, admire her eye for quality and potential, and her colla- borative approach. “A submission from Claire always goes to the top of the pile—not just because of her impeccable taste… but because I know she will be a wonderful partner,” enthused one. On top of that, Wilson has been very active

in the wider agenting and publishing com- munities—as vice-president of the Association of Authors’ Agents and as a champion for bet- ter diversity, sustainability and accessibility. “She is an advocate for change with a great commitment to the industry she works in,” said the judges. “She has made a big impact on her authors’ careers… It is stellar agenting with phenomenal breadth.”
