THE BRITISH BOOK AWARD FOR EXPORT

OVERVIEW The British Book Award for Export is in only its second year in 2020, and is split into two sections: one for companies whose exports of print books and digital content total less than £10m, and one for those whose sales are above that. With data from the Publishers Association showing  exports were worth £3.5bn in 2018— around 59% of the  this is an opportunity to shine a light on achievements that too often go unrecognised.

BONNIER BOOKS UK Bonnier Books UK had rapid growth across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Australasia

in 2019. Heather Morris’ Cilka’s Journey proved a global success, and Holly Black’s The Queen of Nothing was a big contribu- tor on the children’s side. Bonnier has a growing reputation as a proactive partner, travelling widely to get to know markets and asking international customers to contribute to its strategies. “Friendly, knowledgeable and efficient,” said one publishing partner of the team.

JOLLY LEARNING Jolly Learning punches way above its weight in exports, drawing around three-quarters

of its revenue from international markets. Sales grew again in its 32nd year, through a network of Jolly Phonics distributors and trainers in more than 100 countries, with the US, Mexico and Ireland its top three markets. Jolly Learning has also helped the wider market by fostering English literacy worldwide, and providing resources on a non-commercial basis in many developing countries.

NOSY CROW Nosy Crow has drawn more sales from international markets than it records in the

UK right from its inception nine years ago, and it took direct control of exports for the first time in 2019. Its small but energetic team visited 18 countries, as well as the major book fairs, and grew export sales by 20%, with China and other Asian coun- tries particularly fruitful markets for the indie. “A brilliant list and a super-helpful partner,” said one international publisher of Nosy Crow.

DK DK now gets around half its sales from English-language exports, and international

markets have been a major contributor to its turnaround story. It sold books to more than 120 countries and in 60 languages in 2019, and Asia and Latin America had many of its fastest-growing markets. Reference series like Big Ideas and proper- ties like Marvel were the biggest sources of sales. “DK is the perfect mix of excellent product and extraordinary team,” said one partner publisher.

EGMONT Egmont squeezed maximum export value from its mega brands including Winnie the

Pooh, Thomas the Tank Engine and, in his 90th anniversary year, Tintin. Sales were way up on budget, thanks to new distribu- tion arrangements in China, a collabora- tion with Penguin Random House in India and South Africa, and a joint venture with Hardie Grant in Australia and New Zealand. Egmont’s marketing team backed up the export titles with powerful support for retailers around the world.

PAN MACMILLAN Pan Macmillan, like DK, is shortlisted for the second year in a row. It had a sixth succes-

sive year of international sales growth, led by blockbuster sales and marketing campaigns for Elton John’s Me. Edward Snowden was another non-fiction success, while fiction was powered by stalwarts like David Baldacci (above), Ann Cleeves and Andy Griffiths. Children’s exports increased in nearly every region too, and China and Australia were among the best- performing territories across the board.
