he British Book Awards (a.k.a. the Nibbies) were founded in 1990, and in addition to celebrating 2019’s publishing achievements, the 2020 ceremony will also highlight the successes of the past three


decades, as previous winners such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Wild Swans and The Gruffalo’s Child vie to become the overall champion in our 30from30 category. There is something about looking back that reminds us of


the enduring power of books, with many works and authors starting from humble beginnings but becoming huge brands. Time will tell whether this year’s crop, from Adam Kay to Candice Carty-Williams, will become tomorrow’s kings and queens, set to define the next few decades of their publishing. What is certain is that without the hard work of literary


agents, editors, publishers and booksellers (et al), many of whom are highlighted and celebrated throughout this shortlist supplement, authors and their books stand very little chance of stepping up to the next level. The Nibbies exists to support the entire


book trade, from author to reader, and we congratulate all of those shortlisted this year. We also say a big thank you to those sponsors, partners, judges and colleagues that enable us to do this. See you on the night!
