Books of the Year NON-FICTION: NARRATIVE
WINNER WHY I’M NO LONGER TALKING TO WHITE PEOPLE ABOUT RACE RENI EDDO-LODGE BLOOMSBURY
Journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge’s urgent polemic about race was acquired by Bloomsbury editor Alexa von Hirschberg, who said: “One of Reni’s great strengths is that she forces us to recognise that we are all complicit. For us, it was patently obvious that a book like this was essential; not only did we need more young, urgent, diverse voices to lead a new debate about racism, but we needed a book that would serve as a primer to help us navigate the issue.” Once the deal was secured, designer Greg Heinimann created one of
the most striking front covers of last year, rendering part of the title in an uncoloured, debossed text, then publicity and marketing made the book fly. The publicity team secured 26 interviews across TV, radio, online, social media and podcasts, while the marketeers built cross-promotional partnerships with The Pool, Black Cultural Archives and Shades of Noir. The author played her part, speaking at more than 40 events in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Netherlands, and posing for the front cover of Stylist magazine. The judges of the Non-Fiction: Narrative category said Why I’m No
Longer Talking to White People about Race was “fascinating”, “brilliant” and “breathtaking”, and one described the deal as a “very, very smart acquisition” for Bloomsbury, which “added value to the book: it could have been consigned to obscurity if it wasn’t packaged right”.
