Books of the year AUDIOBOOK

WINNER LA BELLE SAUVAGE: THE BOOK OF DUST PHILIP PULLMAN (AUTHOR), MICHAEL SHEEN (NARRATOR) PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE UK AUDIO

Described as "the best piece of narration I’ve ever heard", the audiobook edition of La Belle Sauvage enthralled this year’s judges thanks to Michael Sheen’s exemplary narratory skills. Pullman himself chose Sheen to read La Belle Sauvage, which returns to the world of the His Dark Materials trilogy, then worked with the actor to ensure the various accents and pronunciations were performed correctly. Penguin Random House knew it would have to reach beyond Pullman’s

core fanbase to attract typical audiobook buyers—who are generally younger, male and more urban than those who buy physical books—and Sheen’s star power was a key asset in their campaign. Marketing and communications manager Helena Sheffield worked with PRH Children’s and the US publishing team to co-ordinate a narrator announcement two months before publication, and shared footage of Sheen in the recording studio with the Guardian and E! Online. They also hired Creative Fix to produce a bespoke trailer, including

an extract, which was used in a digital radio advertising campaign on podcasts, digital radio and Spotify. La Belle Sauvage reached number one in the Audible chart and spent three months in the top 40. Sheen was also nominated for Narrator of the Year at the 2017 Audio Production Awards.
