Outstanding Contribution to the Book Trade

WINNER

TIM GODFRAY Meryl Halls, managing director of the Booksellers Association, writes:

Tim Godfray has spent his life working to progress bookselling in the UK and Ireland, and his passion for collaboration, fellowship and extreme commitment have been his watchwords at the Booksellers Association. A tireless leader and an active and engaged role model for his

colleagues, his commitment to the BA has been unwavering and long- standing. He has been a champion of fair competition, in recent years taking the fight to Amazon—and he has relentlessly battered on the doors of the Competition and Markets Authority and Directorate-General for Competition, who have not only listened, but acted. He has also brought his forensic eye for detail to many thorny trade issues over the years, stretching back to the establishment of machine-readable codes and forward to the role of e-book lending in the book ecosystem. Tim has led bookselling for more than four decades, building con-

nections with publishing and other book-trade leaders which have enabled him to move the dial in myriad subtle and useful ways, and he has steered the BA Group through good times and bad, building a strong team. One of Tim’s passions has been his work with his colleagues internationally, where he is rightly regarded as an inspiring leader and role model. Deeply embedded in the management of the European Book- sellers Federation, he has shared his own expertise and wisdom with his peers across the world, helping to raise the standard of bookselling. Tim’s influence on, and deep commitment to World Book Day, since its

inception 21 years ago, has helped establish the project as a household name. He has also worked across the industry to establish and develop the BA’s consumer campaigning, with Books Are My Bag representing a new confidence in the bookselling sector, a confidence in large part due to Tim’s vision and resolution in promoting and representing bookselling. His deep knowledge of bookselling has made him the go-to resource for booksellers, and his high standards and epic work ethic will ensure his legacy in the book trade for years to come.

Godfray was appointed chief executive of the Booksellers Association in 1984

He became its executive chair in April 2018

Godfray is also a director of Book Tokens and Batch, a Trustee of World Book Day,

and a founder member of the European and International Booksellers Federation
