At the heart of publishing since 1858

The British Book Awards 2019 celebrate the very best the book trade has to offer, from huge bestsellers to acclaimed niche titles and, most importantly, the creativity of the people whose work propels such successes

T

he British Book Awards are a high point of the book trade’s year. The time when we can come together to celebrate successful books and the work of those who are part of that success: the author (of course!), the agent, the publisher and the bookseller. Across the following pages you will find standout bestsellers like Becoming and The Ice Monster. But you will also find superb small operations like Small Press winner Wild Things

Publishing, and Edinburgh’s delightful indie bookshop Golden Hare. There are editors championing their authors. There are booksellers hand-selling everything from the latest Lee Child to a backlist favourite. The Awards are about achievement, but it’s not just the big numbers that impress. The

stories behind the sales figures show how the creative, committed, efforts of all parts of the ecosystem can do so much to elevate a "nearly made it" into a bestseller. We celebrate the books themselves and the people behind those books in this most vibrant of creative businesses. We are going through a period of dramatic change and disruption. Books are an

essential part of how civic society works through its responses. Books’ importance matters more than ever. But it’s not all serious. Judith Kerr’s Illustrator of the Year award highlights that the journey from a child being read to by her parent, through to an adult reading Sally Rooney’s Book of the Year Normal People on the bus, is a joyful one. Whether you are featured in these pages or not and whichever part of the book trade you work in, congratulations and thank you for getting more books into the hands of more readers.
