AIH ANNOUNCES CARTER COUNTY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROPOSAL CONTEST
The Ardmore Institute of Health (AIH) is an independent, non- profit Oklahoma corporation headquartered in Ardmore, OK. In keeping with its mission to help improve the health and vitality of people to live more meaningful lives, AIH has em- braced the goal of improv- ing the physical activity rate in its home territory of Carter County.
In order to help achieve this goal, AIH is conducting a con- test to generate proposals for programs or interventions that will improve the overall physical activity rate in the County. The 1st place finisher will be award- ed a cash prize of $10,000, and the 2nd place finisher will receive a $5,000 cash prize.
In 2017, AIH commissioned a telephone survey of Carter County residents (Carter County Diet and Exercise Survey, 2017). This survey was designed to establish a base line physical activity rate, along with information about other healthy living practices. For the survey, physical inactivity is defined as answering ‘no’ to the following question: “During the past month, other than your regular job, did you participate in any physical activities or exercises, such as running, calisthenics, gardening, or
walking for exercise?”
According to this survey, the current rate of physical inactivity in Carter County is 26.8%, which is lower than the Oklahoma state average, but higher than the national average (Copies of the survey report are available upon request).
Proposed programs or
interventions should be designed to encourage physical activity by Carter County resi- dents 18 years or older who are not presently active. While not required, proposals may target a specific group of adults.
In addition to giving a detailed description of the proposed program or intervention, successful proposals will address the following questions: • Who would implement it? • What is the estimated cost to implement? • How many people is it designed to impact? • Who is it designed to reach? • How will it be promoted and communicated? • How long will it be operational? • How will its impact be sustained over time?
The estimated cost to implement, as described in a proposed budget, must not
