Shopfloor TAKE A TOWN
Canterbury Camera Centre, St George’s
Centre A family-run business, this retailer had been trading in Canterbury for more than 40 years – first as Bryan Cowley Photographics in the High Street and now in its present location as Canterbury Camera Centre. Inside the store, I was greeted by Jan, who

asked if I needed any help. I told him that after being pestered by my children, I was looking to buy an action camera. He said that the store sold two models from ISAW. Jan added that currently the store only had one model in stock, the ISAW Wing, which was priced at £99.99. He picked up the box from the display and told me that this was a super-slim action camera that offered full HD 1080p, a 40-metre waterproof housing and a digital CMOS sensor with maximum 12-megapixel photo resolution. He also mentioned that it had a 1.5in LCD
viewfinder and built-in wi-fi with enhanced application viewer. Jan mentioned that Go Pro accessories were compatible with ISAW products.
Currys PC World, Canterbury City Retail
Park, Vauxhall Road I visited this store on a busy retail park to ask about buying a replacement built-in oven. I counted eight customers being helped on the
shopfloor, so I made my way to the built-in area. Alongside the built-in ovens, a member of staff was serving a customer, so I began to browse. There were two models that seemed to match
what I was looking for. The first was a Neff Slide and Hide model (B44S32NSG), priced at £529.99. The price ticket indicated that this had a capacity of 66 litres, enamel oven liners and needed a hard- wired connection.
The second one I spotted was a 66-litre model
from Samsung (NV66M3531), which was priced at £419.99. The price ticket said that it would require “expert installation”. With the salesperson still sat with the same customer, and all other members of staff busy dealing with other shoppers, I left the store without being served.

Fenwick, St George’s
Street FOLLOWING the demolition of Ricemans department store in the city, the Fenwick store opened on a nearby site in 2003. I was looking to buy a premium small appliance
for my recently refurbished kitchen. I took the escalator to the lower ground floor, where the kitchen products were located. The department was very busy with around 15 shoppers, but I could not see any staff on the shopfloor. I found the premium small appliances and there were two suitable toasters on display. The first was the Sage Smart four-slice toaster,
priced at £169.99. According to the details on the box, this model featured extra-wide slots, an LED progress indicator and settings for reheat, defrost and crumpets.
The second model, also from Sage, was a two- slice toaster, selling for £129.95. The boxes of both products indicated that they were designed and engineered in Australia and both came with a two- year replacement guarantee.

Jan certainly knew his stuff, however he did not attempt to close the sale or offer a demonstration. The store was well presented.

Total: 5/10 Summary:
The store was busy, so there was unfortunately no opportunity to assess the sales skills of the staff. The store looked professional.

Total: 4/10 Summary:
With no staff seemingly on the shopfloor, it was impossible to assess the sales skills here. The store was a little untidy with its merchandising and price tickets missing.
