DESIGNER: Caroline Davies, Aristocraft Kitchens and Bedrooms THE CLIENT: A professional couple with two small children undertaking a complete renovation of a 1950s four-bedroom house. THE BRIEF: To create a contemporary yet cosy kitchen-living space with maximum storage. The dream was to have an island and, as they love to cook and encourage their kids to get involved, it had to be child- friendly but also a place to entertain. THE PROJECT: After meeting with the architect, Caroline Davies tweaked the plans to improve the layout, which combined the kitchen and dining room and extended out at the back, allowing her to increase the natural light and create different zones within the space. In-frame unit doors were

chosen and spray painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings. Davies suggested a knurled, burnished brass handle from Second Nature. “When designing I like to mix different handle styles to give a more bespoke feel,” Davies says. The client wanted the Quooker Flex boiling-water tap but didn’t like the bright brass finish, so Davies arranged for this to be recoated in keeping with the handles. To meet the request for cosy style, Davies also added wood accents with oak parquet flooring, shelving and a couple of contrasting drawer fronts. The kitchen scheme takes advantage of the high ceiling, with top boxes for extra storage. Some of them have been glazed to stop the run from being too imposing. The island was designed to look like a freestanding piece

of furniture and incorporates a small pastry bench at one end plus a breakfast bar. Two double larders (one kitted out as a breakfast cupboard) either side of the door into the utility are stepped forward to allow a pocket door to slide in behind. The lower shelves are easily accessible for the children with wine glass holder and wine rack above. Working around a pillar and soil pipe in the living area, Davies added an electric fire and a secret drinks cabinet concealed in a void. There are also a wine cabinet and drawers to store children’s toys. Finally, Davies sourced a table and chairs plus pendant lighting to create a dining area suitable for both family meals and adult entertaining.
