DESIGNER: Martin Baptie, Baptie Design THE CLIENT: The clients were soon-to-retire hotel owners who had commissioned a new build in Edinburgh. They were not happy with their architect’s proposed positioning of the kitchen and approached Baptie Design for something different. THE BRIEF: After trawling through magazines and the internet, the client had found some radical designs that other companies were either unable or unwilling to attempt. Baptie Design rose to the challenge and the company was given free rein to add its own distinct touches.
THE PROJECT: Due to the kitchen being located on the upper floor, with a very high ceiling and a staircase encroaching into the area, the designers were left with an awkward, long and narrow space to fill. Martin Baptie took inspiration from the architecture of the space to create a modern design and, using Hacker units and Silestone worktops, created a futuristic kitchen that echoes the angles of the room. He introduced a feature chimney that incorporates the cooker hood, this reaches straight to the ceiling ridge, this detail was then adapted for an angled feature wall
encasing the Neff ovens. A floating run of units along this back wall provide plenty of storage and add to the sense of space. The lines of the wall were then repeated in the bespoke island which, at certain angles, appears to flow straight from the back wall of the kitchen. “Using a lot of light and height we were able to achieve a bold yet positive arrangement of form work encasing the kitchen and complementing the architecture, without it being over designed,” Baptie says.
