The number of major helicopter Christian missionary organizations; they are Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF), Ethnos 360, JAARS, and African Mission Aviation (AMA). This month’s feature on JAARS’ operations had us wonder how many missionary organizations use helis. The number of smaller, less formal missions that rely on helicopters might be in the hundreds; their efforts should not be overlooked.

The number of feet that teen Juliane Koepcke fell from a LANSA Airline plane that disintegrated when hit by lightning on Christmas Eve 1971. Strapped to her passenger seat, Koepcke crashed into a rainforest. Formally trained in survival skills, she survived by following a creek to a river and was rescued by fishermen on Jan. 2, 1972 with a concussion, broken clavicle, and maggot-infested lacerations. The crash’s cause was officially listed as an intentional decision by the airline to send the plane into hazardous weather conditions.
