HAI HELI-EXPO 2024 HAS ARRIVED!
By Chris Hill, senior director of safety for Helicopter Association International
HAI Heli-Expo 2024 has arrived! As the HAI team celebrates the final days of its 75th anniversary, the expo will feature an unprecedented array of safety events, courses and exhibits, all with a common focus: accident prevention. For 75 years, HAI has enjoyed working side by side with its members and safety stakeholders to help develop, promote and elevate safety in our industry. This year’s event promises to be action-packed with countless exhibits, sessions, and educational opportunities focused on vertical aviation safety.
At HAI Heli-Expo 2024 in Anaheim, California, the HAI Safety Working Group will host the Rotor Safety Zone again. The Zone continues to expand with even more safety stakeholders including the FAA Weather Camera team, HAI safety program partners, Vertical Aviation Safety Team (VAST), U.S. Helicopter Safety Team (USHST), and a host of others sharing the latest safety tech, tools, and solutions. Here are a few examples of what you can expect this year:
•
Robinson Helicopter Company will feature an R-44 static display and the benefits of safety technologies like crash-resistant fuel cells and cockpit cameras to help enhance training and flight operations quality assurance (FOQA).
• • •
Precision Flight Controls will return with two VR flight simulators ready to challenge your decision-making and precision flying skills.
Exhibitors will share their safety tips, tactics, and resources along
with...promotional giveaways!
HAI will launch two safety programs with attractive pricing and incentives for early adopters.
Make plans to arrive early and attend two featured safety events. We’ll shake things up Monday morning (8:30 – 10 a.m.) when the Safety Director’s Forum guest speakers, Ben Goodheart and Gary Grass, challenge our conventional thinking with “Safetyism — How I Learned to Slay the Sacred Cows and Focus on Things that Matter.”
safety B.S. that fails to find and fix your problems? Get ready for a metaphorical massacre of traditional safety thinking! In this 90-minute session, nothing is sacred. Our panelists will challenge the status quo and offer alternative solutions that may help you break the logjam regarding meaningful cultural change. Bring an open mind, select from several available topics, and participate in some spirited debate as we discover more effective ways to elevate safety and excellence in vertical aviation.
You won’t want to miss the next scheduled event Monday: a Safety Symposium (10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.) like none other. First, take a moment and imagine that you’re a seasoned pilot, flying your helicopter and five happy passengers on a perfect day for an air tour. Then – snap! In an instant, your entire tail boom separates from the aircraft. What would you do? You’ll discover why it happened and how everyone aboard that helicopter miraculously survived. This Safety Symposium chronicles the events surrounding a catastrophic accident survival story and is subtitled, “Oh, Snap! My Tail Boom Separated from the Fuselage — Now What?” NTSB Board Member Michael Graham will moderate this edge-of- your-seat session, with the team investigating this accident delivering its first public briefing since the recent release of the NTSB’s final report. The surviving pilot will then share his incredible story. A brief Q&A will follow the presentations.
Many
safety programs are doomed right out of the gate. Why? Are you tired of wading deep into a bunch of what seems like
These first two safety events only scratch the surface of safety, technical, and operational course offerings at this year’s event. For a detailed summary of all safety events and resources, visit
