EDUCATION

Seven years ago I was invited to speak at my first HeliSuccess Career Development Seminar and Job Fair and was literally blown away by the experience. This year’s event was no different and I can say it gets better and better each year. This year we had 13 speakers covering 16 topics and $4,000 given away in scholarship money.

I cannot adequately convey the enormity of the impact the conference has had on my wife and me each and every year. Days after that event we’re still basking in the glow of that positive experience, where mentors and attendees are pulling hard in the same direction to accomplish one goal: HeliSuccess for all attendees. To cap off the three days, there is a job fair where attendees can meet recruiters face-to-face.

HeliSuccess is the brainchild of Lyn Burks the editor-in-chief and owner of Rotorcraft Pro magazine. Lyn saw a need to create a venue where up-and-coming helicopter pilots, and those leaving the military, could receive tips and recommendations from those who have been in the industry for many years–tips on how to succeed in all aspects of the business. The majority of the

attendees are at that point in their career where they are building hours to become employable by helicopter operators, working to satisfy the hourly and experience requirements for the insurance companies or the operators who demand minimum experience and flight time.

The event was well represented this year and supported by the sponsors that included: REACH Air Medical, U.S. Customs AMO, Air Evac Lifeteam, PHI Inc., and Helicopter Institute. The event is supported by Air Methods, 5-Star Helicopters, Air Evac Lifeteam, Seven Bar Aviation, Petroleum Helicopters Inc. (PHI), REACH Air Medical, Helicopter Academy, Dyncorp International, United Airlines-Commutair, Papillon Helicopters, Sundance Helicopters, Med-Trans, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Metro Aviation, Black Hills Aerial Adventures, Air 2, CAL-FIRE, and Zip Aviation.

From what I’ve seen these last seven years, the next generation of helicopter pilots are men and women we in the industry can be proud of. They are sterling individuals showing great integrity and drive. I want to personally wish every one of them every success—HeliSuccess—that I have no doubt they will attain.
