Catering
Bank care home in Lancashire and deputy chair of the National Association of Care Catering, told us: “We regularly share content online, but being a member of the UK List has really helped us gain more publicity in the local area. Our social media posts around our membership have the most ‘shares’ and ‘likes’ out of all our content.” UK List members value the peace of mind that membership offers people looking for care – that each home listed will know, respect, and understand their wishes and ensure their food is vegan or vegetarian. One member recently told us about a lady who was non-verbal and a strict vegan: “She had visited many homes and just really wasn’t comfortable about what they could provide for her. When she visited the home that I worked in and saw the vegetarian logo for VfL she nodded and approved moving to that home. The VfL logo gave her trust and confidence in the care home. Our homes display the VfL logo on their display boards. We know it’s important for potential and current residents and families to know we can cater for vegan diets.”
Boosting chef confidence in vegan cuisine One of the biggest challenges that chefs face
is confidence in providing vegan food. Many are great at providing veggie food, but vegan food can be daunting because it is seen to be more complex. VfL’s training gives teams much more confidence in this regard – and is available both in-person and online. We have been told that our online training is excellent, enjoyable, and exceeds expectations – and that our development training alone is well worth the price of membership.

The commonalities of good practice include providing lots of vegan options and a wide variety of choice from a resident perspective. It is heartening that many care establishments are now joining in with regular Meat-Free Mondays, and we are even seeing monthly veggie and vegan lunch clubs popping up in care homes, offering residents the chance to try out new dishes before they make it onto the menu. Menus are clearly marked as vegan or vegetarian and can be
