Opinion This has been very upsetting for many
residents and their families and friends. The teams in our homes have done as much as they can to support the connection between residents and their loved ones – including using the new tablets we bought at the start of the pandemic for each home to be able to hold video calls between residents and their loved ones. However, we have been painfully aware that a video call is not the same as an in-person visit. We were delighted to start welcoming
back loved ones to be safely reunited with residents from early July but this has sadly been short-lived in many of our homes. The end of summer saw an increase in local lockdowns which meant that visiting at a number of our homes had to stop. We are in such a difficult position,
faced with the dilemma of balancing safety whilst promoting emotional and psychological wellbeing in our residents and desperately wanting to support safe visits for our residents and their loved ones. As these lockdowns continue and as Covid-19 remains with us, we need to find a way to allow safe visits – whether they be window visits, outdoor visits or in visiting pods. There is more that we need to do here to facilitate these and
promote residents’ wellbeing in this way, and make sure the visits enable us to take a balanced and proportionate approach to human rights.
Local and national leadership – consistency and agility As well as continuing with our national Gold Command, we have also more recently developed local Gold Commands, with our regional managing directors taking quick decisions to respond to the rapidly changing situations in local areas affecting homes
in their areas. This has become particularly important in light of the fast- moving local lockdowns that have come into effect, impacting a significant number of our homes. For a large organisation, a key aspect
is how we can ensure and maintain consistency of our approach across the board. This has come to the forefront for us during the pandemic when we have had a variable performance across our portfolio. We are continually reviewing our processes so that we can achieve a standardised and consistent approach
