McCarthy & Stone charitable foundation to champion role of older people
Retirement community developer McCarthy & Stone has launched a charitable foundation to celebrate, champion and defend the role of older people. The McCarthy & Stone Foundation will
deliver a grants programme, longer-term charity partnerships and volunteering opportunities with the support of the business and its employees, homeowners and partners. The company said each programme will be
designed to deliver a range of impacts that will “strengthen communities, support local charities and organisations with resource and expertise, and provide a voice to champion the role of older people in a thriving society”. The foundation will also provide support to
young people who “may be falling behind personally and academically”, as well as communities in need of regeneration. “Covid-19 has shown that there are real challenges to overcome within local
communities and sadly the most vulnerable in our society are often older people and the young,” said John Tonkiss, McCarthy & Stone chief executive and a trustee of the new foundation. “We are therefore delighted to be able to
launch the McCarthy & Stone Foundation to help bring generations together, do more to support the lives of older people and support regeneration,” he added. “We look forward to working together with
our employees, partners and homeowners to have an important and lasting impact on people experiencing challenges around the country.” The McCarthy & Stone Foundation’s
programmes will be started in the coming months, to bring financial support and volunteers to both national and local charities. The application window for grants will be
confirmed in due course. For more information visit

Christmas range and taking on board feedback from customers, we wanted to include meals which reflected the diverse dietary needs of residents – whether that be a plant-based diet or for those requiring softer meal options,” said apetito care homes divisional manager Neil Hargreaves. “Catering for those with bespoke
dietary requirements does not need to be restrictive and all residents should be equally included on all occasions – something that is never more important than at Christmas,” he added. The full list of apetito’s Christmas range
includes wild salmon and spinach crumble, vegan root vegetable pie, roasted root vegetables, sage and onion stuffing, puréed turkey with stuffing, puréed honey glazed pork with apple sauce, pureed festive sponge with vanilla sauce, and chocolate fudge cake. apetito has meanwhile committed to
paying from January the ‘real’ living wage - the voluntary hourly rate recommended by the Living Wage Foundation.
Royal British Legion takes command of Warwickshire refurb
A state-of-the-art dementia care refurbishment scheme delivered across a live Royal British Legion care home in Warwickshire has been handed over by contractor J Tomlinson. The £2.3m Galanos House project in
Southam included creation of two extensions to support increased capacity within the home, as well as landscaping and car parking works. In addition to providing ten additional
dementia care bedrooms to the home’s Poppy Lodge, J Tomlinson also worked with the Royal British Legion to create a new community hub,
which features a day care facility, café and treatment rooms. As part of the project, the company
installed new energy efficient features to help futureproof the building and maximise the comfort of residents and staff. These included a new building management
system, new boilers, underfloor heating, LED lighting and thermal insulation. A portion of the project was delivered
throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, with J Tomlinson working closely with the Royal British Legion to help ensure the safety and wellbeing

of residents, staff and visitors throughout the duration of the scheme. That was achieved through phased and
weekend working, clear segregation, detailed risk assessments, and regular, meetings with the wider project team to communicate and share key updates and best practice. “J Tomlinson have worked extremely
collaboratively with the team at Galanos House and have ensured that the impact on residents and visitors to the Home has been considered throughout,” said Royal British Legion assistant director of operations Steve Barnett.
