Resident care

and ensure processes are as safe and hygienic as possible in these unprecedented times. Pharmacies that offer intelligent

medication management are addressing a number of issues that care home managers face on a daily basis, such as improving administration while reducing errors, enabling residents to remain independent, reducing length of time taken to complete medicine rounds, saving storage space by taking up less space than original packs, and importantly minimising the risk of infection. Through good communication

between care homes and specialist pharmacies, advice and guidance can be provided on the best options that will positively impact care homes and help them manage medicines safety and effectively for both staff and residents. Pharmacies may also be able to

discuss options that provide additional benefits such as an individual medication administration record (MAR) or patient information chart (PIC) to provide care homes with the ability to make the process of administration easier. Regardless of which type of system a

care home uses to manage medication, the residents’ health and safety is

paramount, and as such appropriate training is essential. As an important element of medicines management, some pharmacies may provide free training for care home staff to help support the safe handling of medicines.

Conclusion Innovative approaches, combined with the latest advances in technology, are transforming medicines management processes. It is these recent technology- enabled developments that position MDS as an attractive opportunity for care homes, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and infection control. As technology continues to bring

future developments, and new ideas emerge, care homes will no doubt secure ever greater benefits from such advancements. Strengthening medication management systems within homes by helping provide the best possible care to residents can only be a good thing for the sector.
