Opinion
The social housing White Paper published in November promised radical reform but it did not include one mention of older people. Instead it was more of the same. Not so radical, if you ask me.
Why the time for this change is now? There has not been a year that has tested the social care system more than 2020. If any good is to come out of the experience of the pandemic then it is real reform. Real reform that acknowledges social
care and housing are intrinsically linked lifts pressure off the people who have worked tirelessly every day for the past 12 months, enables people to stay in their own homes with their loved ones for longer and ultimately marks a shift in the way we support older people. Money is not enough anymore. Collectively, we have a window of
opportunity to make change and this needs to be seized upon otherwise I fear we will find ourselves no further forward in the not too distant future. For now, we will continue to marvel at
the care workers who continue to look after many of our loved ones and look forward to celebrating a time when we can all get together again. We have a full schedule of events planned for the summer across our Audley villages and the owners will be very pleased to hear that they are not all virtual.
Ultimately, I hope that we will look
back at the pandemic as a moment that changed and defined how we care for people as they get older for generations to come.
