The exhibition was the first opportunity many of the participating manufacturers, designers, art consultancies, and architects, had had in almost 18 months to showcase their offerings face-to-face to potential customers.
Key messages from the CQC Jane Ray said: “These guides, used by our inspectors, are available publicly to you all. I really hope you enjoy the next couple of days, hearing from different speakers, spending time with eachother, and visiting the stands. Just some key messages from the CQC, however, from me, about the way forward, particularly thinking about patient safety. Firstly, when you’re doing any work, please involve service-users in your design work. Remember that an environment needs to be therapeutic; get this right and it will also be safer. Really think about the quality of care and how it is
delivered, and remember the wellbeing of staff too; we know how challenging it is for staff currently, and if you actually properly address the design of services for staff, and as result have happier staff and better morale, then, by default, this will help make safer, more caring, settings for patients. Don’t forget either,” she added, “how important it is to have a welcoming visitor environment.

last few years.” Outside space was also vitally important, the CQC speaker said, while much had been learnt, in the past 18 months in particular, about the use of technology. She exhorted those present to ‘keep building on the technological advances’, adding, in conclusion: “If you want to know more about what we are thinking and doing, please look online at the various opportunities to engage with us, via everything from Twitter, to podcasts and blogs.”
This concluded a very interesting keynote, and the two speakers then took a number of questions from the audience. n
