CO-DESIGN AND SERVICE-USER EXPERIENCE

architect this was as natural as putting pen to paper. “This is how DrawnOut! was born. To

share our experiences and have others learn more deeply about mental health design, exercise empathy, and work together designing a visitation suite in a psychiatric inpatient setting. Our workshops, in their fifth iteration, vary in length, and have anything from as few as 12 participants to as many as 75. While we’ve geared toward architects and designers, we’ve found vocal support from many disciplines that benefit from the collaborating across silos and impact the built environment. Schools, workplaces, housing, and more, are all sectors that could benefit from considering the mental wellbeing of their occupants with a variety of lived experiences. It’s this creative, collaborative atmosphere that is the most successful element of the workshops; namely the empathy exercise with a partner, the joint sketching assignment, and sharing the drawings in rapid-fire, round robin-style ‘crits’ that facilitate a dynamic group discussion.

Our mission is simple: Defy stigma by design “If we can Elevate the conversation around mental health, Educate each other on Mental Health Design, and Advocate in our practices and influence policy, we can draw out a better world for those in crisis.”
