ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

level, the building envelope is strategically carved out to create secure rooftop courtyards, and introduce a greater amount of fenestrated building envelope – a necessity to accommodate inpatient bedrooms. Views of the neighbouring park and urban fabric are accessible from the majority of spaces, including screened porches, offering children the opportunity to see the city, breathe some fresh air, and understand where they are in the world while staying at the BHP. Every patient bedroom is generously set up to accommodate parent in-room sleeping. Parents also have access to a Family Lounge on each inpatient floor so that they can be close by while their children participate in therapeutic activities and meet with providers.

‘Quiet’ and ‘noisy’ spaces A wide variety of rooms and spaces support structured and unstructured activities for every patient’s treatment plan. There are ample spaces to be noisy and messy, opportunities to be quiet and reflective, and places to be somewhat ‘in between’ – not by oneself, but not quite joining the group – until one is ready. For those children who are ready to explore beyond the unit, there is a penthouse level play yard that extends across the adjacent rooftop. Nationwide Children’s Hospital, as

large and far-reaching a system as it is, understands how critical it is to remain nimble in the ever-changing field of healthcare. Flexibility was a key goal of the project, and as-conceived, the BHP provides Nationwide with a significant amount of future flexibility to add and adjust programmes to its behavioural health service. The new building occupies an extremely compact and efficient floorplate, with a regular structural grid and generous floor-to-floor height. Several of the floors will remain shelled, affording Nationwide flexibility for future development. Programme floors are designed in modules such that inpatient, outpatient, or research programmes can easily be replicated. Nationwide is committed to performing

medical research throughout its campus, and an integral part of the Behavioral Health Pavilion is its inclusion of researchers who are focused specifically on children and mental illness. Dedicated space on the third floor allows research teams to expand and contract, depending on the needs of active research projects. The regularised nature of the building supports this elasticity of activities, eliminating the need for continuous medical research fit-up projects. During construction, Nationwide conceived a partial-hospitalisation

programme, and took advantage of low construction costs to implement the programme in space originally designated as shelled. Today, this programme is located adjacent to the fifth floor courtyards, and brings energy and productivity to the mid-level of the hospital. Sufficient adjacent shelled space remains should the need arise for the partial programme to add another cohort.

Stigma-breaking care Nationwide Children’s Hospital prides itself on the excellence of its care, which is mirrored by the image conveyed by the organisation as a brand. A well-established architectural style has been established on this urban campus, utilising glazed curtainwall, pre-cast concrete cladding,

and generous canopies and site amenities. Interiors feature rich colours and playful references to nature. The utilisation of these elements – which are nothing less than the Nationwide brand – was imperative. Our design makes use of the specific materials palette used consistently by this client, but also introduces a generosity of wood surfaces, warm metal screening, and convenient access to the outdoors. The implementation of built-in wood casework, vibrant colours, and playful nature-themed graphics, is thoughtfully placed throughout the hospital to enhance the patient experience, promote branding, and improve wayfinding. The new facility breaks stigma in its architectural elegance, accessibility, and
