DOORTOP MONITORING AND ALARM SYSTEMS
a life-critical communication device, it imperative that every alarm on every door is tested a least once per week. With the new Conscious Monitoring System, this should be a simple process, whereby Kingsway recommends a few pressure tests around the door edges, which simply requires a quick press and release, whereby the LED on the outside of the door will illuminate. Up until Kosmos was launched, each ward was previously provided with a printed logbook, which captured the door number, along with the date it was tested. As Kosmos will electronically log and store every test on each door, the paper-based logbook is no longer required.
Seen as a positive asset Like all the best technology, the easier any new system is for staff, the more they are likely to engage with it and see it as a positive asset in the role of patient safety. Once a Trust or other healthcare provider has agreed to install Kosmos, a specialist installation team will take it from there, setting up the user interface, providing the computer and screens, connecting the complete door systems to the Conscious Monitoring System, and training staff before ‘going live’. Ongoing support and guidance are critical to ensuring that staff teams feel supported and can feed back on what is working well, as well as on practical areas for development.
Rod Foot
Rod Foot, Technical Project manager at Kingsway Group, is a product specialist with over 20 years’ experience focusing on harnessing technology to improve safety in challenging environments. His first position was at Scope Communications, a leading manufacturer of wireless nurse call systems for care homes, radio paging systems, and point-of-sale messaging systems for major retailers such as Tesco and Waitrose. He also worked on high-profile fire alarm messaging projects at Heathrow Terminal 5 and Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club.
Moving to Stanley Security Solutions as a Commercial Product manager, he was responsible for the company’s ‘UK Healthcare’ product ranges – focusing on emergency voice paging systems for acute NHS Trusts, and staff attack alarm systems for mental healthcare facilities, including secure units such as Rampton and Broadmoor.
After 10 successful years at Stanley, he become National Sales manager at Specialist Alarm Services, then a SME business based in Newcastle, but now a leading supplier of staff attack alarm and patient call systems for mental health environments UK-wide. In February this year he moved to Kingsway Group, where among his key responsibilities are developing a portfolio of technology products, and managing integration partners.
As has been the case with the
creation of Kosmos, future needs will be based on partner feedback and technological developments. Underpinning the development and creation of all new products for us must
be a focus on supporting customers operating in mental healthcare environments with technology which adds value to the working environment, and makes the ward a safer place for service- users.
