Estates and Facilities Team of the Year Andy Powell continued: “For the eighth award we have Estates and Facilities Team of the Year, sponsored by Troup Bywaters + Anders.” Taking its fourth win of the evening was the Rowan View inpatient unit near Liverpool. The development of the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust’s medium secure facility was led by the Trust’s Estates & Facilities leads – Jo Worswick with Elaine Wilkinson, Frank McGuire, Joey Dunn, and Jo Minogue- Sharp. The entry said: “From the concept design, and working with IBI Group and Kier Construction, we created a ‘one team’ approach between the Trust’s Estates and Clinical teams, and service-users with the design and delivery teams. A key component of the team’s success in delivering Rowan View was ensuring that everyone involved understood the critical importance of the unit on people’s lives, and understanding that every single day matters.” The Trust’s culture of ‘working together and supporting every member of staff on and off the ward’ included: l Two service-user consultants were asked how they would want to feel in each of the rooms, and the team worked together to address this.

l As the first lockdown impacted on the programme’s final weeks, the Estates team, Kier, and IBI Group worked together to finish the project by the re-sequencing the works to support deliveries, and ‘working in bubbles’.
l The 12-week familiarisation and training period was adapted to follow a ‘pyramid’ formation to meet government guidance for social distancing, with each trained person training another three, led by the Estates & Facilities champions.

Busy Manchester hospital EFM team commended A Highly Commended went to North Manchester General Hospital (MFT) Estates & Facilities. The North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) is undergoing significant redevelopment works via a New Hospitals Programme scheme, and investing in tackling significant backlog on site. The team’s entry said: “The hospital experiences high levels of activity, with patients suffering from both acute and mental health illnesses, creating a complex challenge for the clinicians trying to administer correct levels of care in an acute setting while patients wait for the next phase of the care to become available in a more appropriate ward environment.” In some cases, this can be ‘weeks and months’, and the Trust’s Estates & Facilities team has thus committed to investing in ward areas to create rooms which are ‘safe, and to the standard of mental health’, and working with the supply chain to ensure that ‘the right products are utilised in these areas’.

The Low Cost – High Impact Award went to Olliefullness, and 11-year-old Ollie Ball and his mother, Krista. Under the initiative they have been donating free mental health jars to support individuals ‘across the lifespan’ struggling with mental health.
