Meeting healthcare needs: developing an MSc for point-of-care testing


Course leader Dr Sean Brown and tutor Robyn Wilson describe the development and content of Abertay University’s new Biomedical Sciences with Point-of-Care Testing MSc.


Dr Sean Brown: Abertay University has been delivering the IBMS-accredited integrated Biomedical Sciences programme for 20 years. The continued success of this programme has resulted in the development of a strong positive relationship between the university and the hospitals that have continued to support us by providing work placements. Over the years a steady


stream of graduates has gone on to employment within the NHS as a direct result of their time on our programme and their work placement. This means that we have contributed significantly to the development of the biomedical science workforce. Something which has ensured that local hospitals can provide robust laboratory services.


Robyn joined the Biomedical Sciences


programme in 2007 and undertook the work placement in the department of Blood Sciences in Ninewells Hospital in 2010. This led to successful employment as a Biomedical Scientist upon graduation within the same department. Since then, Abertay university has developed a long-standing successful professional relationship with Robyn who has supervised Honours project students on our Undergraduate IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science Degree Programme.


Meeting healthcare needs Following discussions with Robyn it was clear that point-of-care testing (POCT) is a huge growth area throughout the global healthcare ecosystems which will require a knowledgeable, skilled and
