CONGRESS: 25–28 SEPTEMBER 2023
Over the four days of Congress there will be over 300 lectures across 15 different subjects and specialties – this is science like nowhere else
culminating in a debate on the use of the teratozoospermia index. Wednesday will commence with presentations on aspects of head and neck pathology, and then move on to changing and expanding roles in cellular pathology. In the afternoon session the use of clots and cell blocks will feature, along with a final presentation on issues related to EQA, IQC, quality and UKAS accreditation. The Thursday programme will cover a variety of topics including experience of digital cervical cytology, perspectives on borderline endocervical cell classification, an update on endocervical adenocarcinoma, and self-sampling for cervical cytology. The four-day programme will conclude with a presentation on the role of the multidisciplinary team in cytopathology.
Haematology The haematology programme will commence with an intensive morning of morphology presentations and a quiz. This is a perennially popular topic and one that is of great value to haematologists involved in haematology morphological assessments. This will be followed on the Wednesday by lectures that address von Willebrand factor (vWF) and thrombophilia guidelines, the effect of long COVID on coagulopathy, and facilitating compliance with ISO 15189 in haemostasis. In the afternoon session there will be case studies on iron deficiency polycythaemia, and a new D-dimer assay introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The day will conclude with two presentations on aspects of quality. The Thursday programme will focus on the topics of guidance and quality. The former will include presentations on flow cytometry EQA, CAR T-cell therapy, gene therapy, and measurement uncertainty evaluation; and the latter will include a presentation by UK NEQAS Parasitology, advancing online haematology morphology

assessment, and digital morphology for CPD.
Closing Plenary session Disasters and mass fatalities feature all too frequently in the news, as accidents, the consequences of terrorist activity, or the casualties of war. The victims may be recovered and identified in the relative immediate aftermath of the event or it may be weeks, months or even years later when their names and deaths are discovered.
This is the work of those involved in disaster victim identification, often difficult, frequently harrowing, but always necessary. These are the people who help to uncover what really happened and help to restore dignity to those whose lives were brutally ended. In the light of increasing international conflicts this year, the Closing Plenary session will address the subject of disaster victim identification, and is an important reminder of a duty of care that extends way beyond what most people could ever imagine.
Company Members perspective The IBMS Congress offers a unique opportunity to all attendees whether attending the entire Congress including lectures and workshops or just visiting the exhibition.
Whatever option selected, the exhibition is an invaluable opportunity to interact with commercial companies presenting unique developments for all disciplines from simple routine tests to incredible state-of-the-art innovation in automation and high-throughput rapid testing.
Covering all disciplines in biomedical science, the exhibition offers something for everyone, says Mark Read, Chairman of the IBMS Company Members group. Throughout the exhibition you will find opportunities to see equipment in operation that is not always possible at local laboratory levels and there are many opportunities to interact with your industry partners within the diagnostic industry from sales, technical support, regulatory affairs, development and production areas. If you are as passionate about biomedical science as are those in the industry that supports you, it is quite simply an event not to be missed.
